About Black Cat Sanctuary
According to the National Library of Medicine, black cats in shelters have the highest euthanasia rate of any cat color at 74.6%, and the lowest adoption rate at 10%. In contrast, white cats have the lowest euthanasia rate and the highest adoption rate, while brown and gray cats have "middling" rates. These patterns remain significant after controlling for breed and stray status, with the exception of orange and white cats.
The Black Cat Sanctuary of Indianapolis is dedicated to rescuing and providing a permanent home for black cats, while also advocating for their well-being and educating the community about their unique needs and the myths surrounding them.

In addition, donations to Black Cat Sanctuary will be used to pay the donation fees of area shelters for individuals looking to adopt a black cat to decrease any financial barriers.
Our Mission
At the Black Cat Sanctuary, our mission is to rescue and provide a safe and loving environment for black cats in need. We believe in advocating for their well-being and educating the community about the unique care and attention black cats require.
Our Objectives
-
Rescue: To provide a safe haven for black cats that are abandoned, abused, neglected, or surrendered, offering them shelter, medical care, and love.
-
Rehoming: To find loving and permanent homes for all black cats in our care, matching them with families that will provide a safe and nurturing environment. We will also provide a permanent home for those who don’t want to be adopted.
-
Education: To educate the public about the misconceptions and superstitions associated with black cats, promoting their adoption and care.
-
Advocacy: To advocate for the protection and rights of black cats, working with local and national organizations to improve their welfare and treatment.
